Fluoride Treatments - For the Life of Your Teeth

Fluoride is a mineral that is found naturally in many things we eat or drink.  It's nature's way of helping prevent cavities.  Professional strength (in-office fluorides) and low strength (home fluorides) each play important roles in helping to keep your teeth for life.  In the lifelong fight against cavities both adults and children benefit from in-office treatment and home fluorides.

Everyday a tooth's enamel (the outer layer that makes a tooth hard) has minerals both added to it (remineralization) and removed from it (demineralization).  During remineralization, minerals such as fluoride, calcium and phosphate are added to the enamel layer via foods and drinks that contain these minerals.  Minerals lost (demineralization) when acids - from bacteria in the mouth and certain foods and drinks such as coffee, iced tea, sports drinks, soda - attack the enamel.  Tooth decay results when the enamel loses more minerals than it receives.

Professional in-office fluorides make teeth stronger and even heal weakened areas.  Professional products are highly concentrated and can only be applied by a dental professional.  Over time, the high level of fluoride provided by the in-office treatment will gradually be released from the teeth.  This is where low strength home fluorides, such as toothpastes and mouth rinses play a valuable role.  These home fluorides are an important and valuable compliment to the office treatment by replenishing and maintaining a beneficial level of fluoride in the teeth.  Think of office fluoride treatments and home fluorides as your "one-two punch" in the lifelong fight against cavities.

Please feel free to speak with any team member about the benefits of fluoride.

Dr. Dorgan Selected as Top Dentist again

The only double winner in Main Line Today’s Annual List of Top Dental Professionals

Each year, the publication, Main Line Today, contacts more than 1,000 dentists in Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties and asked them to name their top picks in nine areas of dentistry.   Making the list in a category – particularly based on the votes of fellow dentists – is a great honor.  Being recognized in two categories is an amazing achievement and extremely rare.

That’s just what happened to our own Dr. Jay Dorgan.  Dr. Dorgan was recognized in both the “General Dentist” category as well as the “Cosmetic Dentist” category.  The ever modest Dr. Dorgan is humbled by the recognition.  “It really is an honor to be singled out by your peers,” said Dr. Dorgan.  “I have many dentists as patients so they not only know me professionally, they have first hand experience with my work.  So that makes it even more special.”

Main Line Today started its “Best of” series in 1997, so this year marks its tenth year.  The vast majority of categories that are covered, including restaurants, spas/salons, nightlife, are voted on by readers and editors of Main Line Today.  Only the medical and dental categories are based on a jury of peers.

Dr. Dorgan was among those recognized at the tenth annual Best of the Main Line and Western Suburbs Party which was held in July.  It was a special evening for a very special, and deserving dentist.   Congratulations, Dr. Dorgan!

T-Scan II

The Occlusal Analysis Solution

We have added the T-Scan II to our high tech equipment to allow us to better analyze and adjust our patient’s bites when we detect or suspect problems.  The degree of sophistication is unbelievable since we can now record in real-time the teeth contacts in 3-dimensions as you bite down and slide your teeth to the side or the front.  We can then review the data looking at each contact every 0.01 seconds of the 3–10 seconds recording.

The T-Scan is a grid-based sensor technology and occlusal analysis system that allows for an easier, more accurate way to measure occlusal timing and force.  The T-Scan plugs right into our computers in the treatment room.  The vivid graphics makes seeing a bite discrepancy easy to see.  This data can be printed and will provide valuable documentation for patient education, patient files and insurance documentation.

The T-scan will help reduce the risk of :

  • Porcelain fractures
  • Ineffective splints
  • Unstable dentures
  • Traumatized teeth
